Author weaves hot issues into human stories. Author and Little India
resident Allan Stratton tackles some touchy subjects in his new book
Borderline, released March 2010, about a Muslim-American teen whose
family becomes the centre of an international terrorist investigation.

Internationally renowned author and Little India resident Allan
Stratton tackles some touchy subjects as he plumbs diverse cultures
and young characters.

Stratton's new book Borderline (HarperCollins, March 2010) is about a
Muslim-American teen, Sami Sabiri, whose family becomes the centre of
an international terrorist investigation after Sami's father is caught
in a lie.

"It's a story of parent-child conflict and a story of identity, of
kids being at an age when they want to fit in with their peers, but
also want to find out who they are," said Stratton, also an acclaimed
playwright and actor.

"The son wants to know 'What's the truth about my dad? How do I know
what's real and not real?'"

Stratton was inspired in this parental-quest issue partly by his own
personal situation. He was raised by a single mother in the 1950s. His
research into suspected-terrorism news items also motivated him to
write Borderline.

"There's a real fear of 'the other'."

A recent School Library Journal review of Borderline praised the book
as "notable for its characterization of a strong male Muslim who is
true to his faith and struggles to do the right thing throughout."

Borderline takes place partly in Stratton's own Gerrard Street and
Coxwell Avenue neighbourhood, with landmarks like the Ashdale library,
where he has lived since 1991 with his partner Daniel. "While names
may be changed, anyone who knows the area would recognize it."

Wherever Stratton's books are set, the characters are caught up in
challenging situations and forced to make difficult choices as they
struggle with personal issues.

"We all have things we're not comfortable with," said the award-
winning author, who learned to hide to survive as a gay kid in the
1960s. "We live with secrets, and live with the fear of secrets being
revealed."

His travel, interviewing and research for his young-adult novel
Chanda's Secrets, brought home to him the overwhelming stigma of HIV/
AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. "There, the infrastructure of the entire
society is affected."

People fear being tested or can't afford help, and would rather live
with hope, said Stratton, who has cared for friends in the final
stages of AIDS.

In the book, which has received critical international praise,
character Chanda struggles to raise her young brother and sister when
their mother becomes ill and segregates herself. Chanda brings her
mother home to die in peace and dignity, and also helps a close
friend.

In sequel novel, Chanda's Wars, Chanda risks her life to rescue her
stolen siblings in a world of civil wars and child soldiers branded on
the chest. A new Extras edition of the book features former child-
soldier artwork.

Wherever Stratton's youthful protagonists live, they have challenges
with their families, friends, loyalties and relationships. His novel
Leslie's Journal explores young-adult abusive relationships and
stalking.

"It's worse for teenagers. And the stalker could be exactly where he's
supposed to be, in the classroom."

In the story, revised to include cyberstalking and online blackmail,
teenaged Leslie struggles against odds to bring her tormentor to
justice.

Stratton's next young-adult novel The Grave Robber's Apprentice is set
in the late 16th-century and "takes me back to my days as a comic
playwright."

Creator of long-running popular play Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii and
many others, Stratton is a two-finger typist who said he always knew
he needed to write, just like breathing.

Also a passionate global traveler, Stratton went to South Africa
again, to watch the filming (now completed) of Chanda's Secrets in a
Canadian/German/South African production.

Recently, he returned from Vietnam and Cambodia, where he read from
his novel Chanda's Secrets and fielded questions, with an interpreter,
at the 2010 Vietnam Book Fair in Saigon.

The response was excellent, Stratton said.

"The mother-daughter bond is universal. So is fear of stigma and
shame. So is pain of bereavement. So is the difficulty of living with
truth."

Dear Ashok,

April 19, brings in memory of having lost you to death. But every year on this day thinking about your role as advocate for people living with HIV makes me feel that you are still alive.  This year I did a small search. I googled your name ˜Ashok Pillai" it brought in many matches. Reading them made me feel that even in death you have continued to have a voice.

I found articles, photographs and interviews "on living with HIV, ending stigma against positive people and asking governments leadership on treatment€" every thing had you and INP+ in it. I found you smile in the poster courageous in the decision to come out open.

Your strength and honesty evident in the smile you adorned your face with not a trace of fear. All this to remind me that you were real a true activist who put the community of people living with HIV before everything. Even Toxoplasmosis and the fits it brought to you, did not deter you from working hard.

You discontinued the ART from a private organization  because it would compromise your advocacy. And many other instances where in pressure you performed like a true leader and set standards which to this date stand unparallel.

For everyone who knew Ashok and did know his activism - please light a candle at 1pm on April 19, 2010 to rekindle in each of us the spirit of activism this would be a fitting solidarity to a leader of his grit!

Great Amstel Gold finish. Never give up, never surrender!

Thought for a (short) bit that Cadel might be the man, but kinda tough
trying to repeat what worked at the world's. Not like everyone isn't
looking for it. Feeble attempts by others, but Gilbert just kept it up.
Of course, if he'd run out of gas and lost, in fine RBR tradition we
would have trashed him. Everything the did would have been stupid. I'll
bet that's what motivated him. Once he started, he lived in fear of
being trashed on RBR.

Driving distance from Girona to Maastricht is about like driving distance

Dumbasses,

Driving across the continent to get to Amstel Gold would be pretty
stupid for a rider focused on the TDF.

Ever thought about the child caught in crossfire?
http://beta.thehindu.com/opinion/open-page/article402271.ece

DR. MEENA CHINTAPALLI, The Hindu, April 18, 2010

I was shocked to read the observations of the honourable Judges of the
Supreme Court of India endorsing the views of actor Kushboo on the
issue of pre-marital sex. I have been living in the U.S. for the last
35 years. I have seen the "emotional trauma" a child undergoes when
the mother is unable to identify the father. Such a child has low self-
esteem and its economic performance is poor when caught in the legal
battles of paternity rights and rejections. The result: the child
lives with rejection, rejecting himself or herself, building up anger
towards the parents and is a boiling volcano that will erupt anytime.
These children grow up with a variety of abnormalities — Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disability (LD) Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Bipolar Depression. We now have
research proof that brain networks connect after birth till five years
of age determining the behavioural pathways in the future in a child.
All are the result of early childhood experiences.

In a morally chaotic world, India should set an example by promoting
morality and integrity, not permissiveness in sexuality. All religions
agree that life is a gift of God. Human beings are the only ones
gifted with rationality to distinguish the right from wrong, express
feelings, reflect and take the right decision. Animals do not have
social responsibility. No schooling is needed for them.

Carnal pleasures are not the purpose of human relationship and
marriage. The highest purpose of man-woman relationship is to
effectively plan for raising good children in a socially acceptable
structure and to have companionship in life and for social protection.

Encouraging sexual relationships with the co-living prior to marriage
leads to what the western society is now regretting. The guy loses
interest in the girl he has a relationship with, as another girl
attracts his attention for whatever reason. The girl tries to save the
relationship by getting pregnant. The guy walks out of the life of the
child and the mother. The mother looks for another support and that
man will not accept this child and this child will not accept the new
guy. Anger builds up and this leads to emotional and physical abuse as
well. The child grows up with insecurity and the mother loses interest
in the child as a result of the failures and depression.

Leave alone the moral angle, think about the social chaos that will
result in a highly populated country like India that does not provide
much systemic or societal by way of counselling or treatment for
people in such trauma. The crime scene will escalate, besides AIDS /
HIV and other sexually transmitted illnesses. Level-headed people and
organisations should therefore, get together to avert impending
disasters that will result from such deviant social mores. Otherwise,
our children will go astray. What an insult to India and all that it
stands for! What an insult to the spiritual wealth that we share with
the world.

School Girl Involved In Teen Beating Will Be Prosecuted As A Juvenile
http://topnews.us/content/217223-school-girl-involved-teen-beating-will-be-prosecuted-juvenile

Submitted by Amit Pathania on Sun, 04/18/2010

The 15-year-old, Wayne Treacy, who was accused of harshly beating
another teen at a Deerfield Beach school bus stop, was not given bond
this Saturday.

According to her Attorney, Daniel Callahan, Manson will be prosecuted
as a juvenile.

Callahan said, "Consequences might last for the rest of her life, as
well as with Josie and with the other participant, so right now we
just want to make sure that our client's rights are protected and that
we get her through these murky waters as well as we can".

Wayne Treacy, also 15, allegedly punched Ratley and tread heavily on
her head with steel-toed boot. He is being held in a juvenile
detention center on an allegation of planned attempted murder of the
15-year-old Josie Ratley. Treacy will be brought to the court on April
19th for the decision that whether he'll be prosecuted as an adult.

Treacy attacked Ratley on March 17th after she sent him a text message
in which she accused his elder brother who had lately committed
suicide. Doctors shared that Rately suffered a severe brain injury and
is recovering slowly but she still can't speak or walk.

Manson will have to return to school while she awaits trial but not to
the same school where the attack took place. She will be enrolled in a
new campus.

The Power of Social Media to Save Lives
http://www.tonic.com/article/the-power-of-social-media-save-lives-ushahidi/

BY VERONIQUE PITTMAN | SUNDAY, APRIL 18, 2010 9:00 AM ET
A look at protecting the health and rights of women now — from the
Tribeca Film Festival to the open-source platform of Ushahidi.

For the first time in 20 years, maternal mortality appears to be
declining significantly, according to a recent Lancet report. Of
course the goal is not simply to reduce deaths but to improve health
and protect women's rights. To survive and thrive, girls and women
require a comprehensive package of sexual and reproductive health
services (contraception, maternity care, safe abortion, and diagnosis
and treatment of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS),
along with comprehensive sexuality education and protection of their
human rights.

Anyone who has seen the brilliant Girl Effect knows that this is not
just a women's issue. It is at the core of peace, prosperity and the
environmental health of our planet. To view firsthand how meeting the
most basic needs of women transforms communities, don't miss Christie
Turlington Burns' (yes you can hate her — she's gorgeous, smart, kind
and deep) No Woman No Cry at the Tribeca Film Festival next week
through the end of April.

Last May, President Obama announced the launch of a $63 billion, ten-
year Global Health Initiative, which promotes an integrated approach
to improving health outcomes worldwide. The core principles
underpinning the Global Health Initiative mirror the vision of
partners of one of my favorite orgs: the IWHC: a comprehensive, woman-
focused model of care centered on the realities and needs of local
communities. Investments such as these will not only help eliminate
maternal mortality, but will bring us closer to securing a just and
healthy life for women everywhere.

But it's no longer OK to sit back while the USAid, IWHC's partners,
and the heros in Christy's film do all the work. And thanks to
Ushahidi, an open-source platform developed in Kenya, we now have the
power at our fingertips to anonymously report violence against women,
instances human trafficking, terrorist activity, drug trafficking,
gang violence, natural disaster victims, and deaths. Ushahidi was used
in both Haiti and Chile to receive text messages reporting trapped
victims and were plotted on a "crisis map" thus enabling rescue
workers to reach the victims more quickly. According to the New York
Times, "Ushahidi remixes have been used in India to monitor elections;
in Africa to report medicine shortages; in the Middle East to collect
reports of wartime violence; and in Washington, D.C., where The
Washington Post partnered to build a site to map road blockages and
the location of available snowplows and blowers." Imaging signage on
subways, Times Square, billboards, radio and TV spots actually giving
us all the power to make our neighborhoods safe and help others. As my
friend and blogger Mishele Wells says, "Social media saving lives? Who
says there's such a thing as 'too much information?'" Let's hope that
Ushahidi gives folks something better to do than tweet about the
health of their fingernails!
