The stereospecific distribution and evolutionary significance of invertebrate lactate dehydrogenases

George L. Longa

a Department of Chemistry, Pomona College, Claremont, California 91711, U.S.A.

Received 25 November 1975.
Available online 28 January 2003.

Abstract

1. 1. Diphosphopyridine nucleotide coenzyme-linked lactate dehydrogenases from 48 species representing six invertebrate phyla have been examined for lactate stereospecificity and starch gel electrophoretic mobility.

2. 2. Every organism was found to contain enzyme activity for only one lactate stereoisomer, although in several cases multiple molecular forms were observed.

3. 3. The minimum number of changes in stereospecificity to accommodate the evolution of the major invertebrate classes are four.

4. 4. An alternative evolutionary tree for the invertebrates based on lactate dehydrogenase is presented which requires only one change in stereospecificity.

I'm only reading this thread because I knew there would be a post or
two like this one which I will respond to, yours being the only one so
far.
Basically this place has been more of a chore than something I have
enjoyed and if someone is going to stalk me as Carl is, I'd rather not
be here. I am fine posting in a moderated internet NG where this kind
of BS doesn't happen and it's not due to the mod, it's more due to
people respecting each other be it we coached football or not.
Basically this is one time I didn't take someone to task over
something I felt was just plain wrong, I made an ambiguous post about
how things were looking better here at the end result and Carl came at
me. I then made a reference "You can't win them all" refering to Carl,
not the Jets and he again went after me. He then told me Fuck You in
one post and in another agreed with Johnnys opinions which I'm not
even going to mention but let's just say there were a lot of unkind
things Johnny said about me.
So there you have it.

Glenn...I am not stalking you....get a grip...you responded to what I said
that set this off...you went after me ! I apologize for God's sake.

Carl what's the point? You apologize until the next time I don't think
Schott was at fault and you tell me to go fuck myself again?

Glenn, let's be reasonable...I have a hot temper at times, I admit. But
look at the words you use...you don't tell me you think I'm wrong or give me
reasons..you start out telling me I'm double talking etc. Yes...stuff like
that irritates me. Am I supposed to not say what I think about the
offense????? It seems that if I continued to post here that is the only
solution that would satisfy you. I can't figure out what your post is in
reference to...I thought you meant the Jets. I'm not going after you...if
we lived near each other I would like nothing better than to shake hands,
sit down and talk like friends. I go off...yes, but you do a good job of it
too. I just don't think I'm going to become a believer in the Jets
offensive system till something really changes.

Schotty sucks. It should not be taken personal by fans who KNOW he
does suck or the ones who THINK he's being scape goated. We dont
suck. Schotty does.

:-) Very good advice. I'm very happy they are winning and I want them to

Oh come on. Then there's John, who feels it's his civic duty to defend
Schott to the death and perpetually give him the benefit of the doubt.

He's right more often than not, btw. Although I still think Schott is
mediocre.

Well, if he's telling a story, that's one thing. The back in my playin
days, this thing happened to me, is fine. But when debating anything
football related, and there's a disagreement, it's back to the "me play
football, me coach football, me know better than you" BS. I'm sure
everyone in this group knows the background by now.

"Rookie Colt McCoy carved up the Jets on the game-tying drive ... then
the Jets were on the verge of losing when McCoy connected with Chasni
Stuckey ..." only to be saved by the gift fumble. [NY Post]

Did that have anything to do with the game being close? Having a 4th-
game QB "carve up" our D in clutch time like that?

Would that have happened last year?

As the O has collected near 900 yards in the last two games, winning
with clutch big pass plays at the end of the half and regulation and
in overtime, with the baby QB getting better and better, we hear over
and over from the experts that It's Schott's Fault! No, no, not
Sanchez getting better and better, and all the big plays, and the 900
yards. That's not Schott's fault. :-)

It's Schott's fault that the wins weren't bigger, the 7-2 isn't real,
there are unappreciated weaknesses on this team that keep it from
being a real contender -- which, as the result of their detailed
expert parsing of the O, they know are Schott's fault!

After all, this team was Championship Game quality last year, and with
all the great talent brought in this year it should be much better
than it has shown. *Something* must be disappointing, holding the team
back. QED: It's Schott's Fault!.

I agree. Something *is* holding the team back, stopping the team from
blowing out the opposition. But I think I've found something else
(though apparently it is so small and subtle that even all our experts
here have missed it):

Jets pass defense:

....................... 2009 .... 2010

passing rating .......1 .......... 23
Yards/game ..........1 ........... 18
Yards/attempt ...... 1 .......... 7-9
Yards/completion .. 2 .......... 31
Interception % ......11 ......... 30
Sack yards ........... 8 .......... 16
AYA/A*..................1 .......... 20

(* Yards passing - sack yards - 45 per int +20 per TD, divided by
attempts, the one stat that correlates most strongly with winning.)

Notice anything?

I know a lot of the people here don't like fancy stathead metrics, so
those are just the straight old stats from NFL.com, except for AYA/A.
(For any who do like stathead metrics, Advanced NFL Stats has the Jets
pass D at #19, down from #1 last year, and FOers has it at #21 down
from #1.)

WTF? Didn't they tell me the disappointment this year has been the
offense?

Does defense affect the score in games?

The Jets pass D has *plunged* from league-dominating to *below
average*. How much of an "expert" does one have to be to see the
difference between being ranked 1 and 23 by passing rating, and 2 and
31 on yards per completion?

We all know the Jets aren't built to win a championship with the
passing O, it's just supposed to be competitive, the kid QB protected
and set-up by the ground and pound as he learns.
.
But they ARE built to win a championship with a dominating pass
defense, like last year's. Does anyone see a problem here relating to
that?

The defense brings in big new talent in Cromartie, Taylor, Wilson,
etc., and has plunged! Who can be responsible?

Hey ... It's Rex's Fault!

Meanwhile the passing O has significantly improved from last year:

Jets O rankings

passing rating:
2010: # 19
2009: # 29

AYA/A:
2010: # 16
2009: # 27

In fact, the Jets passing O now ranks *higher* than the pass D!

Jets O passing rating: # 19
Jets D passing rating: # 23

Jets offense AYA/A: # 16
Jets defense AYA/A: # 20

Yup, our "Schitty" pass offense ranks higher than our Rextastic! pass
defense.

This is in spite of the passing O being handicapped by, everyone will
admit, an inexperienced baby QB still learning his way, while the D is
all veteran and loaded with all-star talent all over the place!

The offense has brought in new talent and gotten better. What excuse
does the defense have to bring in all the new talent and get worse --
to have fallen all the way from #1 in the league to even worse than
Schott's offense?

It's Rex's fault!!

Let's follow the logic: The team is disappointing -- even failing in
expert opinion -- because it hasn't improved enough from last year.
The offense has improved significantly from last year. The defense
has plunged from last year.

Following the iron law of justice that places accountabililty upon he
who deserves it, that "fair is fair"....

It's the OC's fault!

No, sorry, SDS almost got me ... It's Rex's Fault!!!

This team is 7-2 because the *run* D is very good, the run O is good,
the passing O has improved from last year, special teams are generally
good, and they've been lucky in a bunch of close games. That looks
good enough to get to the playoffs. But the passing D that was the
backbone of the team last year is no more.

And the skeptics are right, the Jets are going to have a real tough
time fighting their way through the playoffs to a title with pass D
that fallen to a quality rank near 20.

What excuse can there be for the pass D falling so far after adding so
much new talent? None. It's Rex's Fault!!!!

What excuse can there be for so many expert observers in this ng not
even seeing it? Only one: Schott Derangement Syndrome!

When our resident experts finally notice this fall in the D -- *and*
consider the effect on the points-for-against and W-L that can be
expected when a team's passing D falls from being ranked
"#1+dominating" to "below average" -- I'll consider them to be taking
the first steps towards recovery, and might weigh their expertise as
being worth considering again. If they stop being so self-righteous
about it.

Until then, hmmmm....'

Looking at the way the passing O has gotten better and the pass D has
plunged... maybe the problem is that Woody hasn't given Schott enough
power over the defense!

You can not say that all that escape artist stuff by Sanchez and the

And yes... The defense Rex called was IMHO partly at fault for letting
the Browns tie it up. Part of the reason was good receptions made by
the Browns in excellent coverage, but there still should have been
more pressure put on the pocket.

Rex made a few mistakes... Schotty makes them all the time.

Michael you are wrong. Rex is the HC.

The mistake Rex makes all the time is letting Shotty call the plays
without any feel for the opponent or a game situation.

Rex is also responsible for play design that is cutsie instead of just
going after the opposing D with zone blocking and cut backs after
spreading the box wide with two dangerous WR and sometimes a TE. None
of the motion is needed (except to spring a WR being held at LOS).

Shotty is just doing his job as well as he can. Rex is abrogating his
responsibilities.

Schotty sucks.

Michael...here is a prime example. Some of us are not supposed to criticize
Schott and if we do we will get blasted. Yet all these other guys can mock,
ridicule...whatever it is...and it sure sounds like the kid on the
playground with all the "I'ts Rex / Schotts Fault" stuff. I know I never

coordinator and I don't think he gets the most out of what he has to play
with. But the point here is...how is this fair game and anything you, Burf,

I have no proof..but I do know Schott was there first, and I do know that
Woody and Marty are friends and have been for some time. Marty even did
some speaking engagements for Woody in his many endeavors in Jersey. So I
make a connection. I have not seen anything to tell me it does not make
sense. When Woody wanted Favre he got him. And...although I really don't
care for Francesa I think his analogy of Woody not liking Mangini is
probably accurate. Woody loves attention, and Rex brings it, so Rex gets
away with some of the unorthodox behavior.

i expect to get blasted here but i dont take it personal. i dont
think much of schotty. this is based on his history of constant
mornic calls and lack of adjustments. sanchez wins two games with
personal skill and heroic effort and a few people take it as an
oppertunity to poke fun at the anti-shottists.

schotty sucks

My brother in law in Richmond is a die hard Skins fan. When they got McNabb
I told him they were not going to be happy for too long and to get used to a
lot of balls thrown at receivers feet. I live closer to Philly now than
NYC...McNabb is either loved or hated with those fans. I did go to a
preseason game and was very impressed with the stadium...but could never be
a fan of the Iggles.

JK, reports indicate $40 million is guaranteed. That is three years at
top dollar for a guaranteed for a 33 or 34 year Qb without a single year
of getting his new team to the playoffs. Dumbest.

One more thing. In a game where scores were hard to come by, I find it
instructive that after the Browns starting corner went down, NOT ONCE,
did Shott try a real hurry up offense as a change of pace after the
success Sanchez had with it against Detroit.

And, he rarely had Sanchez intentionally throw on the move in spite of
the strange anomaly that he appears to be more accurate when doing so,
not less.

Supercourse:  Global Health, so near, so far

Supercourse Newsletter

Nov. 15, 2010

www.pitt.edu/~super1/

Dear Friends,

Please forward this newsletter to those who want to improve global health.

Prevention is better than cure. (Erasmus)

The Supercourse/Library of Alexandria Global Health lecture is taking off. We plan to markedly increase knowledge of Global Health in the world during 2011 (the year of the Rabbit, and the lecture will run world wide like a rabbit). By the year 2012, we will be a dragon of knowledge in the year of the dragon.

The concept is simple, with your help we plan to double the awareness of global health in the world next year.  So far we have had over 100 people fishing for deans, lecture development and translation from 30 different countries, all working together. It is heartening to see our Supercourse/Library of Alexandria world team build awareness for global health for your university, and for centers world wide.

There is a rising world interest in global health, however, few of us are qualified to teach it.  However, with our Supercourse lectures, we all can teach about global health.

We have forwarded to each of you all 5 slides on global health, and we asked that you use at least one slide in your teaching, and that you forward the slides to your colleagues and students. Many different professors have and plan to teach using a slide from the Supercourse.  It is very exciting.  We already have the short version translated by our friends in Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Hebrew, Japanese,  Malay, Macedonian, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese, (http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/lecture/lec40331/index.htm).  We have sent the short lecture in English to over 50,000 people, including you.  Already a large number of people have forwarded the lecture to their students and friends.  Last week we sent out the translated lectures to our network and medical schools and these have received numerous compliments..

We have been extremely pleased with the response.  We would like to have some idea as to how many people are receiving the lectures.  Would you please write to me (ronaldlaporte@gmail.com) and tell me how many people you think received the global health  lecture   in your school, or in other schools in your country?

"Globalization, facilitated by the rapid development of new information and communication technologies, though representing a challenge for cultural diversity, creates the conditions for renewed dialogue among cultures and civilizations." UNESCO

We know that this is large and will grow bigger. The World Health Organization plans to make the Global Health Lecture available through their site.  I just talked with a good friend from India , Shiv Mathur, and he indicated that many faculty in India will be teaching about global health because of the Supercourse/Library of Alexandria Lecture.

One of the nicest responses we received was from Shirwa, a Somalian.  What is very interesting is that even in a country having the difficulties of Somalia , there is considerable interest in global health. Also, as the result of your lectures, we are providing knowledge support to the country as seen below.

Dear Prof. Ron, though you like to be addressed as simply Ron I have to simply because through you me and my Somali colleagues of health professionals you can't believe the doors you have opened to us! In relation to the high demand of educational resource, based on the fact that Somalia since collapse almost all infrastructure faded and to reestablish was almost unforeseeable to us as the health professionals until we found YOU & SUPERCOURSE ON GLOBAL HEALTH.

Lastly I have to say dear Ron, may the almighty allah(God) give you and your dream team collaborating on this essential and practical project on global health, particularly in the under-served countries.

I will always remain yours,
Shirwa
"Teaching students about the world is not a subject in itself, separate from other content areas, but should be an integral part of all subjects taught. We need to open global gateways and inspire students to explore beyond their national borders." (Stewart)
Many of you indicated that you were planning to build a global health course or program into your university.  We are pleased if we can help you. We will make these lectures available to your for free, please contact ronaldlaporte@gmail.com). Also, if your friends are teaching about global health or interested in global health, have them contact me.
Serageldin, appointed to College de France
Our good friend Ismail Serageldin has just receive a very prestigious award from the President of the Republic of France , Nicola Sarkozy.  He has been appointed in the College de France as Professor to the International chair Savoirs contre pauvrete (Knowledge against poverty), for the academic year 2010-2011.
Dr Serageldin is one of the cofounders of the Supercourse, and Directs the Library of Alexandria in Egypt .  He had faith in the Supercourse when no one else did.
Translators:  Over the years we have had many people world wide join the Supercourse and translate lectures, Eugene has build a site which recognizes the Supercourse translators:  http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/assist/translators.htm .  Please review this site, and see if we may have missed you.  The champion translator is Nicholas Padilla, the head of the Latin American Supercourse.  He has translated over 350 lectures.  It is amazing that we have have 3131 different languages represented in the supercourse.
Contribute to the Supercourse:  Dear Friends we estimated that last year it cost only 0.03 pennies to teach a student with a lecture from the Supercourse. However, we taught 6 million.  In the next 2 months we will double the awareness of global health and prevention in the world. We provide free, top quality lectures, however, we need some help to keep going.  If you have used the Supercourse, or are thinking of using the Supercourse, we would very much appreciate if you would support the Supercourse at:  www.pitt.edu/~super1/
"Globalization is a fact. Every major problem we face – from economic growth to the environment to public health to reducing poverty and inequality to improving national and homeland security will require more international knowledge and cooperation than ever before."  (Hunt)
"The value and utility of Global Education derives from the sense that international events require all societies and their citizens to become knowledgeable about the world beyond their national borders."
REMEMBER, Please tell your students and faculty about the Golden lecture of Global Health, and have everyone teach from this. Send the URL to all faculty and students that you know or just forward this newsletter to friends and list serves.
Faina's pick of the week

Lecture of the week: Golden Lecture of Global Health

Everybody is interested in Global Health. When we ask public health students in any classroom how many of them are interested in global health, over 80% of the audience raise their hands. However, what is global health? In this lecture of the week, we are trying to explore this interesting concept from the point of view of changing patterns of disease over the course of the past 100 years and also within the paradigm of the global networking of the faculty members around the world. We prepared 2 versions of this lecture: a longer one, designed for regular 1-2 hour classroom lecture and a 4 slide version, designed to highlight just the main concept of global health importance. The shorter version can be incorporated into any medical / public health lecture to highlight the importance of this area. In the past several weeks, Supercourse collaborators world wide are  working hard to distribute this important lecture around the world. It has been translated into ten languages. If you are interested in further distribution of this lecture, please write to us.

The lecture can be accessed at http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/lecture/lec40341/index.htm
