incorrect again. The Jets, having clinched, may rest the starters.
Once clinched, the rest of what they do is wholly irrelevant. The
best you can do is hypothesize about how the Jes would have done vs.
the Bills if they were in a win or out position.

If a team starts 12-0, wins the 12th in a 1pm game, and mathematically
locks up a playoff spot when somebody else loses that day in a 4pm
game, the trolls in its group will say it "backed in".

Next.

Next.

Like the Pats backed in because somebody else lost that day....the reality
is, at this point in the season a lot of "clinches" are because someone
lost...so they are all backing in so to speak.

With Rex blitzing so many on every play without ever getting to the
QB, whoever is back in pass coverage is alone, naked, running to get
somewhere as fast as he can, with zero margin of error, and doesn't
have time to turn around to enjoy the sights.

As I've noted before, this is the big failing in the D this year
compared to last.

Last year Rex's D confused opposing QBs so much that they had the
lowest completion % in the league -- and the second-lowest yards per
catch on what they did complete. That equals domination.

This year opposing QBs still have the lowest lowest completion % in
the league -- but the opposing OCs have figured out how to get huge
yardage on completions against that blitzing, the Jets are at the
league bottom.

Look what Martz just did with Cutler, who ain't exactly Peyton or Tom
or Phil or Drew -- 3 td passes from over 25 yards out, and 16 yards
per completion for the game. The worst number in the league for any
team for the full season is 13 yards.

Rex had better come out with pass defense version 2.0 for the
playoffs. The warrantly on last year's version has expired.

Most likely they are in some kind of man coverage, almost definitely and
they are going full speed to pick up a guy who already has a head start and
knows where he is going...they don't...this is the hardest thing any D back
could be asked to do.

I am with you. The fact we can rest players is a huge benefit. I am
curious who will replace Sanchez. If they truly believe it is Brunell
then play him teh whole game. If they aren't sure split it with
Clemens.

Damn...I'm not so sure I'd rest any of them...they absolutely need the
"practice"

Well you have been there but losing a player is always a worry.

If a guy is nicked up, rest him, but maybe play the 1st half like
colts did last year.

I can see taking out Sanchez....and anybody else with a serious injury...but
too many of them need the work beyond that...and, they just don't have any
quality backups...aren't some of them playing already? Let's let McNothing
play and see what he can do....and run The Terminator some...let him get a
few carries...but who can you mess with on defense?

I watched and the only thing I could think of was that SO many players leave
the Jets and go on to do amazing things....they "just didn't fit the system"
or they "may never recover" from an injury...the list of reasons goes
on...but all it really says is that the people who judge talent elsewhere do
a Hell of a lot better job at it than whoever has been doing it for the Jets
over the last few years...and even way before that. There have to be a lot
of guys here who have had experience with the corporations or businesses,
schools or whatver that no matter how they changed leadership they still
kept a certain identity and atmosphere associated with that identity. Could
this be an issue with the Jets? For some reason, it seems to me they let
far too many very good players move on, and don't recognize how good they
are. Vilma could very well be the answer to what is wrong with Rex's D
right now...they need a LB who can cover in the short zones, and they don't
have one.

Don't miss Vilma, still a horrible open field tackler, but I do miss
Farrior and even more, Abraham and Ferguson; Mawae was still very good
and did go to the probowl with the Titans.

If you think he is a horrible open field tackler you have not been watching
many Saints games this year or last.

terms like "hybrid" and "34" OLB "two gap DT" "three technique" have
their place, but after all, a quality football player is still a
quality football player on any team in any system. these days, so
many of the defenses out there like jets, saints, ravens, steelers
have so many looks and packages that there is a need for any style of
guy just so long as he plays great like vilma and abraham.

Amen...yes, yes, yes....anybody who thinks they have THE system and must
find certain players to work in it and can pass up on quality...is a loser.

Agreed

He was as true a tackler as I have seen wear a jets uniform

He was one of the few LB's around who could always cover from sideline to
sideline and never gave up....I was very disappointed when he left, I really
liked him.

Jets defense is missing its swagger, according to coach

Published: Tuesday, December 28, 2010, 4:35 AM

By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

Head coach Rex Ryan plans to go back to the basics to help Jason
Taylor and Jets defense regain its confident form.

CHICAGO For Rex Ryan, the defensive-minded Jets coach, this is a
scenario that needs to be fixed.

He praised the way his offense is playing, saying the unit is
peaking at the right time. But his defense?

Ryan tempered his criticism somewhat, pointing out the poor field
conditions at Pittsburgh and Chicago and noting that their opponents
didnt get much of a pass rush, either.

We just have to get the swagger back, Ryan said Monday from the team
hotel here, where the Jets were stranded until the early evening.

While the offense has found a formula that works the past two weeks,
in games at Pittsburgh and Chicago, Ryan said the defense turned in
two performances not up to the Jets standards.

Areas of concern that have flashed all season were highlighted in the
Jets 38-34 loss to the Bears on Sunday, particularly as the defense
gave up 21 points and the lead in what linebacker Bart Scott called a
whirlwind of a third quarter.

Ryan has a plan to fix the problem.

*****To get back to who our defense is, we need to practice, he
said. Were going to go back to individual drills, fundamental
drills, and really hone that, which is kind of unusual at this time of
year. We really have to, because thats how were going to get better.
Theres no magic call.

Ryan said he has noticed fundamentals slipping, and cited quarterback
Mark Sanchezs recent strong play after working on his technique as an
example of the effect going back to the basics can have.

He noted defenders putting their hands on receivers, playing the
proper leverage and getting off blocks when defending the run as
examples of techniques that have slipped. The results turned up in
several ways Sunday: the Jets yielded five pass plays of more than 20
yards, couldnt get consistent pressure on Bears quarterback Jay
Cutler and allowed 113 yards on 19 carries to Matt Forte, the first
100-yard rusher they have allowed this season.

Communication woes, an issue all season, showed up in a big way when
the Jets only had 10 players on the field for Devin Hesters 25-yard
touchdown catch one of three Bears touchdowns in 7:14 in the third
quarter. *****

You have to have a sense of focus throughout the game and understand
that theyre going to make adjustments, and we have to make sure that
were able to respond, linebacker Bart Scott said Sunday. We have to
be better: not letting them spill out on the run, fill the gaps, play
techniques right. Were going to see those types of plays throughout,
because we struggled with a couple of them.

The Jets have had several very strong defensive efforts this season,
but two games in a row have disappointed Ryan at a critical time of
year. Last week against the Steelers, the Jets almost allowed another
100-yard rusher Rashard Mendenhalls tally after the game was
dropped to 99 yards and gave up 378 yards of total offense.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine indicated last week there would be
some personnel changes against the run in Chicago. Defensive linemen
Vernon Gholston and Marcus Dixon seemed to be more involved. The Jets
havent said if theyll make tweaks moving forward, but Ryan did say
he hopes the return of safety Eric Smith (concussion) will give the
unit a boost.

He also pointed out that the defense is still ranked fourth in the
league, but seems worse when compared to last years exceptional unit.

Still, that exceptional defense was a big reason why the Jets advanced
to the AFC Championship Game last year and with the Jets facing a
similar challenge this year, hitting the road for the postseason,
thats a piece of the formula theyd like to have back.

Its not an easy task when you get three games on the road, just to
make it to the Super Bowl, Ryan said. We know its stacked against
us, but were gunning for it. There is no reason we shouldnt be. I
cant say enough how excited I am about the way the offense is
progressing, especially these last few weeks. I think and I believe
that we will get our defense back again.

I read a version of this article in our Central Jersey papers....Wow....it's
all I can say...he realizes he needs to have some basic D in place.
AND...he finally figured out he needs to practice...OMG ! What some of us
thought could be true is true...they did not practice the essential
skills...that is horrendous coaching at any level...and I was taught that by
top pro coaches, not just a high school deal.

A lot of folks here were unhappy with Leonhard's coverage skills, but that
was not really his primary job. What he did do was hit really hard, and
make some great tackles...in addition he kept everybody on task and doing
what they were supposed to do in terms of allignment and assignment...the
two keys to any good defense, if you don't get those right, nothing much
good happens after the snap. He also was very good at over coverage with
the corners or what I always learned as "sky and clouds....safety or corner
support"....he did it and made a lot of what the others did work better...he
is a huge loss IMHO. Papa Carl

I know not what the fates have in store for the
only season that matters: the postseason.

The regular season even tho it's not over, seems
like a thousand centuries ago. That first rainy MNF game,
depressing as hell. That triumphant rebound week 2 over
NE. The Sunday night party in Miami. The image of the orange
fireworks blasting off right behind me, I can still see it.

In that game I was always confident. I said toughness matters, I
said we're tougher than Miami. And when they put LeBron on the
jumbotron from his seat, I booed his soft Miami ass lustily.

I was 1/2 opening the season and the Jets were 2-1. Before I knew
it I spent Thanksgiving with the Jets victoriously and we were 9-2
ready
for NE. Or so we thought. Made my first trip to Foxboro and aside from
the score it was wonderful. I'd love to play for a 3rd time, if so I
now know
the lay of the land, and we will battle.

Once the playoff begin all bets are off. The reg season means nothing,
it's
ancient history. Toughness matters.

Yup....and being able to do things like get all 11 guys on the field for
defense and not have senseless penalties or make horrible coaching decisons
matter even more in the post season...let's hope Rex's plan to go back to
practicing works.

i agree.... the jets defense is just not that good. i think it is a
manpower issue. lots of us thought with cromartie, the jets d would
be monsterous. ideal for the pressure-press that rex likes. pace,
ellis and BLT have not been productive in the pressure part of the
game. they are also in trouble without leonhard and poor coverage
range in general by their current safeties. at least pool has been a
lot better the past few games.

Essentially what other teams have done is to attack the weakness of the Jets
D...NOT the stregnth which is Revis and Cromartie....they played the inside
game and did it really well....they exposed the fact that with a very weak D
line the LB's are the only hope for a pass rush without bringing the
safeties.....so everything inside and underneath is open...plus...they are
not that good against the run when they are outguessed....Rex designed a
defense for a particular type of game...and BB for one, got rid of that
game...don't you think that had a role in getting rid of Moss? Where things
seem to be going now is perhaps the end of the marvelous shut down corners
deal...so maybe Revis saw this all coming and wanted to get his big piece of
pie while he still could?????

PC, no one is above suspicion in any sport.

I was surprised that he was only 230 when he played. That & the fact
he looks fit made me give him the benefit of the doubt but see my 1st

:)

I always thought he was closer to 250 when he played...he just looks so
small now...."Moose" does too...when he announces...he is a very thin
guy...not the moose who played TE.
