Chandigarh: With the increasing cases of fraud and other property
related cases involving NIRs in the state, Punjab government has
decided to put the details of about 15 lakh NRIs belonging to the
The state's information and technology department will execute this
project by creating a database of NRIs in the next six months. Along
with personal details, their photographs will also be put online.
"We have already begun compiling the data of NRIs living in various
countries like the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and in other European
countries," an IT Department senior official said.
During the last few months, many cases of property frauds and marriage-
related disputes, involving NRIs, have surfaced in Punjab. In many
cases, it was difficult to track them because of distance problem. But
soon their details will be available online which would help in
probing NRI related cases, the official added.
Besides, the Punjab Police has also made a special page on NRIs on its
website, wherein they can contact it to lodge their complaints.
"The NRIs can contact us online. Through a webpage dedicated for them
on our website, they can speak with senior officials through the video
conferencing facility and lodge a complaint online," SAS Nagar SSP GS
An aggrieved NRI can access the website in for video conferencing
every Monday between 4.00 to 5.00 PM. The complaint can also be
registered through e-mail.
