Chandigarh: The department of Life Long Learning and Extension
(DLLLE), Panjab University organized two-day Training Programme on
population related issues – "A Commitment towards the Social Cause" at
Brahmrishi Yoga Training College, Sector-19, Chandigarh. Seventy
students and teachers attended the programme.

Dr Savita Kansal, Principal of the College expressed her deep concern
over the concept of low female ratio in India and said that there is a
need to check female foeticide at grassroots level.

While highlighting the objective of the programme, Mrs Renu Gandhi,
Programme Incharge expressed that today there is a need to discuss the
population related issues with the community so that the people should
appreciate the small family norms, increase female ratio, female
literacy, infant morality rate among female which is high as compared
to males. Reproductive rights of women and HIV/AIDS are the areas
where proper education should be provided to women so that they take
healthy decision to choose the right family size.

Dr Shiva Malik, Assistant Professor from Dev Samaj College for Women
explained the issues of population and development. She expressed
that unchecked population growth rate, if not dealt with qualitative
measures; the development of the society would not be sustainable for
a longer time. No doubt, because of over population India is going to
be number one in the near future with regard to economic development.

Dr Avinish Jolly, Physician discussed the causes related to HIV/AIDS
and how youth of today could take preventions with regard to HIV/
AIDS. Youth of today have to generate life skills among themselves
like self awareness, problem solving, creative thinking and management
of stress and emotional stability for getting of the culture of
trivialization. Participatory dialogue and discussion would help in
changing the mindsets of adolescents which resulting into their
healthy life-style. The students of the college were receptive and
give all the right vibes to the resource persons.

Dr Sarwan Singh, Assistant Director, Population Research Centre
explained the different phases of population, namely family planning
measures, population education, population and development and
population for sustainable development.

Dr Jyotsana from Brahmrishi Yoga Training College emphasised that
there is a need to have programmes at grassroots level so that the
people become aware of the population related problems and find
solution among them, Prof Ajaib Singh, Director, DLLLE, PU informed

Sex-workers' support group denied bid to challenge Ont. Appeals court
on prostitution laws
http://www.canada.com/life/workers+support+group+denied+challenge+Appeals+court+prostitution+laws/4450852/story.html

By Linda Nguyen, Postmedia News

TORONTO — A sex-workers' support group has been denied the right to
bring up a constitutional challenge in an upcoming high-profile case
at the Ontario Court of Appeal which deals with whether prostitution
laws in Canada put sex workers' lives in danger.

Ontario Justice Dennis O'Connor wrote in an eight-page decision
released Wednesday that Toronto-based Maggie's will not be allowed to
argue that prohibiting sex work violates the country's equality rights
by discriminating against women by sex and occupation.

"Introducing such a significant new ground on which to challenge the
legislation, even on the existing record, would necessitate a thorough
analysis of the record and the preparation of new material to address
the issues," he wrote.

Maggie's, the first government-funded sex-workers agency in the world,
had applied for intervener status because although it believes that
current Canadian laws put prostitutes at risk by forcing them to ply
their trade underground, it argues that the legislation discriminates
against women — who make up the majority of sex workers.

In mid-June, a five-judge panel will reconsider a decision announced
last year by Ontario Superior Court Justice Susan Himel. The decision
struck down the laws that ban operating or working in a brothel,
communicating for the purpose of prostitution and living off the
avails of prostitution because they endanger the lives of sex workers.

Both the federal and Ontario governments are appealing the decision,
which essentially, could legalize the industry in the province and
might pave the way for other jurisdictions across Canada to do the
same.

The governments argue that there should be no obligations for them to
provide safety measures for those who work in an illegal trade. The
appeal also cautions that irreparable harm may arise if the sex trade
were legalized in Canada, including a possible increase in sex tourism
and human trafficking rings.

Last week, lawyers for Maggie's stated that there was enough
documented evidence presented in the original case to hear this new
argument.

O'Connor disagreed, saying the vast collection of 25,000 documents
which were presented by both sides was not sufficient to argue a new
constitutional challenge and allowing it would result in a delay in
the proceedings.

"I am satisfied that it would do a disservice to the parties, to the
court, and indeed, the public interest to litigate a section 15 (of
the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) challenge on the basis of this
record," he wrote.

He added that Maggie's could join with one of the other seven
interveners already approved in the case, which include the Canadian
Civil Liberties Association, the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, the
Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and the Prostitutes of Ottawa/Gatineau
Work, Educate and Resist.

Declining child sex ratio alarms social scientists
http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/health/declining-child-sex-ratio-alarms-social-scientists_100521038.html

Friday, April 01, 2011

New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) With the 2011 census showing a continuing
decline in the country's child sex ratio, social activists across the
country are alarmed at the trend underlining the continuing preference
for boys in society.

Organisations working in the field of women's rights feel that the
drop to 914 women against 1,000 men - the lowest since Independence -
is a matter of great shame for a country boasting of high economic
growth

"It is a wake up call for India. We are heading towards a social
imbalance. Declining sex ratio should not be seen only as government's
responsibility, we as civil society organisations should continue to
mobilise the community in order to encourage them to allow girls to be
born," said Ranjana Kumari, director, Centre for Social Research and
president, WomenPowerConnect.

Sex selective abortions have become easier in the last one decade,
enabling people to determine the sex of the foetus just by purchasing
modern and portable ultrasound machines, she said. The Pre Conception
and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act also remains ineffective as
there is no body/committee monitoring its proper implementation, she
observed.

"Despite the policies taken up by the government which prohibits sex
selective abortions, the girl-child sex ratio has fallen. We all need
to strengthen efforts and undertake programmes in a mission mode,"
Ranjana Kumari added.

According to her, Punjab and Haryana, have recorded an increasing
trend but still remained at the bottom of the list. Haryana has 830
female children while Punjab has 846 against per 1,000 male child.

"The good news is that the overall sex ratio at the national level has
increased by seven points since the 2001 Census to reach 940 females
per 1,000 males," she added.

The story of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani <http://www.almuslim.com.au/>

caravan, a gang of dacoits raided the caravan. When they came to check
Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (May Allah have mercy on him), an eighteen
year old young man, the dacoits inquired if he had any valuables. He
told them about the gold coins which had been stitched into his
clothes by his mother. The dacoits asked him why he let them know of
the hidden money, to which he replied that his mother had advised him
to "never lie". Upon this the dacoits become ashamed and repented to
Allah.
It is the duty of parents to be an example to their children and
advise them. Allah (the Supreme) tells us of the advice that Syedna
Luqman gave to his son:-
"And remember when Luqman<http://www.786travel.com.au/> said to his
son, and he used to advise him, "O my son! Never ascribe anything as a
partner to Allah; indeed ascribing partners to Him is a tremendous
injustice." [Luqman 31:13]
Then after some verses, the advice continues:-

"O my son! If the evil deed is equal to the weight of a mustard-seed,
and even if it is in a rock, or in the heavens, or wherever in the
earth, Allah will bring it forth; indeed Allah knows all the minutest
things, the All Aware. O my son! Keep the prayer established, and
enjoin goodness and forbid from evil, and be patient upon the calamity
that befalls you; indeed these are acts of great courage. And do not
contort your cheek while talking to anyone, nor boastfully walk upon
the earth; indeed Allah does not like any boastful, haughty person.
And walk moderately and soften your voice; indeed the worst voice is
the voice of the donkey." [Luqman 31:16-19]
We can recall not too long ago in our Muslim culture <http://
www.eagletravel.com.au/> that all grown-ups in the community would
take the role of guides for the youth. No child dared to misbehave in
front of elders in any gathering. All the elders held enough authority
that they could discipline the child without having to face the wrath
of the parents as is the case today. As a result, children tend to
misbehave and disrespect elders because they no longer fear being
disciplined by anyone besides their parents, and that too is seen
little.
Parents realize it too late - that what they thought was giving
'freedom' to their children was in fact destroying them. Being
affectionate to your children is one thing but to let them to do
anything as they wish, is not affection - rather it is harmful for the
child. This is the result of the parents' forgetting their duty of
teaching the child. More often the television takes the place of the
parent and it is from here the child gains much of his/her ill-
mannerisms. Let these words be a reminder and a word of caution.
When children are able to speak a little, teach them the name of
Allah. Before, mothers would put their children to sleep by chanting
"Allah – Allah", but now it is by shamefully playing the music on the
radio! <http://
www.oliveweb.com.au/>,When children are mature do not do anything in
front them which will ruin their mannerisms because they tend to copy
these acts. They do whatever they see their parents doing. Never argue
with your spouse in front of them because this puts a lot of stress on
children and causes them to think that they are the cause of the
argument. Never curse your children.
Offer the Prayers in front of them, recite Quran, take them to the
mosque with you, and tell them stories of our pious predecessors as
they like to listen to stories very much. Hearing stories with lessons
and morals will increase their good habits. When they are a little
older, teach them the Five Declarations (Kalemat), Concise Faith
(Imane Mujmal), Detailed faith (Imane Mufassal), and then teach them
how to offer Prayers (Salah).
Put them under the guidance of an Allah-fearing, pious scholar (Aalim)
or Qur'an Memorizer (Hafiz) – definitely holding right beliefs & from
creed of Ahle Sunnah - to acquire the knowledge of Islam & the Holy
Qur'an – so they can know more of the beautiful religion to which they
belong. Teach them the rules & practices of bathing, ablution &
prayer.
If Allah gives you proper guidance, try to make your children Islamic
Scholars or Memorizers of the Holy Qur'an. A Memorizer (Hafiz) will
get three generations forgiven and a Scholar (Aalim) will get seven
generations forgiven (on the Day of Judgment). It is baseless to think
that a scholar has no source of livelihood. Know that one does not
earn more than what is destined by acquiring worldly knowledge; one
will get only what the Almighty Provider (Razzaq) <http://
www.paktimes.com.au/> has written for him.
Teach your children simplicity and do not expose them to materialism.
Teach them the value of doing their own work. Send them to college,
make them judges, make them doctors or to adopt any successful and
halal career in this world - but make them such that they carry on
these professions as honest Muslims who know their religion.

I see where republicans wnat to require an ID when you go to vote.

Given all the fake IDS/stolen identities/etc.how do you
prove that you are actually who you say you are?

The same goes for the Arizona law. There is no fool
proof way to prove that you are who you say you
are.

There's no IDs required to vote in the US??? Srsly?

In Canada, they get your name and address from your tax return (if you
say that's okay) and they get the rest of the names by going
door-to-door to get the name of everyone of voting age.

Everyone is assigned a voting location. You go there and you are
assigned to a single table and can only vote there. You're name is on
the list. You provide ID if requested, they cross you off the list. No
one can pretend to be you and no one can vote if they're not on the list
and cannot provide ID with proof of residence (phone bill etc).

Then there's no foolish electronic gadgets or pull tab thingys. You go
in behind a piece of cardboard, mark an X next to the person you're
voting for and poke it in a box. The votes are counted at the end of the
night with representatives from all the parties watching.

Simple.

Election fraud is something you don't see a lot of up here.

Something to be said for a parliamentary system.

Oh, and our elections last all of six weeks at most.

Why do Canadians put animals on their currency? Because they don't
have enough famous people.

Maybe they'll have a $5 Parkinson's with Mikey J. Fox on it!!

Having lost their fight in the legislature, Wisconsin unions are now
getting out the steel pipes for those who don't step lively to their
cause. A letter we've seen that was sent to businesses in southeastern
Wisconsin shows that Big Labor's latest strategy is to threaten small
businesses with boycotts if they don't publicly declare their support
for government union monopoly power.

Dated March 28, 2011, the letter is addressed to "DEAR UNION GROVE
AREA BUSINESS OWNER/MANAGER," in Racine County. And it begins with
this warm greeting: "It is unfortunate that you have chosen 'not' to
support public workers rights in Wisconsin. In recent past weeks you
have been offered a sign(s) by a public employee(s) who works in one
of the state facilities in the Union Grove area. These signs simply
said 'This Business Supports Workers Rights,' a simple, subtle and we
feel non-controversial statement given the facts at this time."

We doubt "subtle" is the word a business owner would use to describe
this offer he is being told he can't refuse.

The letter is signed by Jim Parrett, the "Field Rep." for Council 24
of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees,
which is the most powerful union in the AFL-CIO. The letter presents a
litany of objections to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's changes to
benefits and public union collective bargaining power, describing them
as "things that make life working in a 24-7 facility tolerable."

The missive concludes by noting that, "With that we'd ask that you
reconsider taking a sign and stance to support public employees in
this community. Failure to do so will leave us no choice but do [sic]
a public boycott of your business. And sorry, neutral means 'no' to
those who work for the largest employer in the area and are union
members."

mr dude (save America! Kill a union member!!!!)
