I just watched it.
Petacchi came off Cavendish's wheel FFS.
Cavendish had a fair amount of room on the left. Petacchi
moved left but he was a bike length ahead of Cavendish
at that point and he didn't put him into the barriers.
I think this is just a training-bitch by Cavendish to make
sure he's in full bitching form by July.

Cav lamely said later that he was only mad at the judges, not Petacchi. Which is of course not true. But it's a semi-respectable backpedal for adrenaline fuelled rage, not to mention that Ale-Jet really did seem to squeeze Cav. I might or might not relegate for that, but I'd say Cav really has been done in for less.
A more respectable backpedal* would have been "yeah, I was a bit of a wanker there. The race officials were right to take no action. We'll race, bravo Alessandro, I'll get him next time."

(usually with cars, but sometimes not). I've stopped trying to make
sense of it, because you can't. Once in a while I leave for my
Tuesday/Thursday-morning training ride and think about what I might be
leaving behind. Kids, wife, business, friends. Sadness. My best wishes
to his family.

I've been complaining about my Swiss group ride and yesterday, I was
supposed to go on an even worse ride with triathletes (but what else
would you expect from them) who ended up not showing up. So I rode
alone but when I got to Versaille, there were 4 bike messengers on
fixed gear bikes doing their Sunday group ride outside Paris. I rode
with them mostly out of anthropological interest. Soon came the red
light at which were parked numerous cars, they slowed down to about
30kph and the first 3 made it through, but as there were a bunch of
pedestrians crossing (with their green light) the 4th guy saw it would
be difficult, tried to slow down, probably hit his front brake and
slid out and flew off the bike hitting one of the pedestrians. Luckily
for him, he was laying on the floor in such a sad state that the
pedestrian didn't have the heart to hit him back. He was wearing a
skateboarding helmet so was totally sweating in the 25C weather, and
didn't have any gloves so hurt his hands. His buddies came back to
help him up. When they started again, his friends went through the
next red light, but I thought he may have learned his lesson because
he waited. That theory was disproved at the next red light.
Anyway, the worst riding I've ever seen, because despite all the
badness I've encountered, it never actually ended up with random
pedestrian assault.
From what I could tell, their ride consists of the guy feeling
strongest at the time riding as hard as he can and every one else
tries to stay on. So far, pretty similar to a lot of rides. Where it
differs is their handling of red lights: The first guy rides as if
he's alone and is able to handle the danger, the others feel obliged
to follow, but by 3rd or 4th in line, the situation at the
intersection has changed so that it's no longer possible for the
person to pass and the inevitable accident. Since they're messengers
and do all their city riding alone, they obviously have not figured
out that you can't ride in a group this way without having accidents.
Since they're stupid, they keep doing this even after it leads to an
accident.

Clinton Raises Alarm On Rising Food Prices. "US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned Friday that global shortages of food and spiraling prices threaten widespread destabilization and is urging immediate action to forestall a repeat of the 2007 and 2008 crisis that led to riots in dozens of countries around the developing world. Clinton told a meeting of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that urgent steps are needed to hold down costs and boost agricultural production as food prices continue to rise…." AFP adds that "…more than a billion people suffer from hunger around the world. An estimate from the World Bank cited by Clinton said that high food prices had already pushed 44 million people into poverty in the past 12 months…." [Agence France Presse/Factiva]
Bloomberg writes that "…Clinton and President Barack Obama have funneled administration resources into food security, which the US sees as integral to stabilizing developing countries…. The Feed the Future program that the US State Department and the US Agency for International Development oversee aims to 'strengthen the entire agricultural chain,' Clinton said. WWF Takes Images Of Rare Tigers In Logging Forest. "The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has recorded images of 12 endangered Sumatran tigers, including a mother playing with cubs, in an Indonesian forest that it said is about to be cleared by loggers. WWF, which estimates that there are only 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, captured the images on camera traps in the Bukit Tigapuluh forest on central Sumatra island, which has seen rampant deforestation for palm oil and paper plantations…." BBC adds that "… 'What is unclear is whether we found so many tigers because we're getting better at positioning our cameras or because the tigers' habitat is shrinking so rapidly here that they are being forced into sharing smaller and smaller bits of forests,' said Karmila Parakkasi, who leads WWF's tiger research team in Sumatra…. 'This video confirms the extreme importance of these forests in the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem and its wildlife corridor,' said Anwar Purwoto, the director of WWF Indonesia's Forest and Species Program…." The Jakarta Post reports that "…the forest where the tigers were recorded is under imminent threat of being cleared by the pulp and paper industry, despite being designated a 'global priority Tiger Conservation Landscape.' It is one of six areas the Indonesian government pledged to protect at last November's tiger summit of world leaders in Russia. Bukit Tigapuluh is located in Riau and Jambi provinces in Central Sumatra…. Between 2004 and 2010, Bukit Tigapuluh lost 205,460 hectares of forest to pulp and paper and the palm oil industries…." US Forgives $1 Billion Of Egypt's Debts. "The US will cancel an estimated $1billion of Egypt's debts….The decision is part of a bundle of economic aid, which also includes commercial and investment-related incentives that seek to restore stability following the 25 January revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak….
Egyptian growth rates are expected to dip 4 percent from last year, and pressure to create jobs is mounting. Since the start of the revolution, the US has given Egypt $150 million in economic assistance and Tunisia $20 million…." [Al-Masry Al-Youm (Egypt)]
The Washington Post adds that "…economic assistance for Egypt and Tunisia is 'fundamental to our capacity to support their democratic transitions,' a senior State Department official said on the condition of anonymity. He said that officials were in the midst of 'intense policy formulation' but that the economic package wasn't finished. Parts of it will need congressional approval….

Colombia Receives Approval For $6.2 Billion Credit Line From IMF. "The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Friday approved a two-year, $6.2 billion credit line for Colombia. The IMF said the Colombian authorities intend to treat the arrangement as precautionary and don't intend to draw on the Flexible Credit Line. 'Colombia's strong economic performance has been underpinned by a sound institutional framework and skillful macroeconomic management,' said IMF First Deputy Managing Director John Lipsky in a statement…." Interview: World's Poorest States Must Diversify. In an interview with Reuters, World Bank Managing Director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said, "Making juice from their own fruit crops or polishing gemstones from their mines would help the world's least developed countries diversify their economies and reduce poverty… 'Just producing crops is not enough. You need to process the product you produce and create jobs,' Okonjo-Iweala said….
The former finance minister of Nigeria urged Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to cut red tape, focus on delivering services, empower the private sector and improve living standards. The World Bank has just raised $49 billion for the next three years to support the 79 poorest countries in the world. A particular focus would be on post-conflict countries she said, which need strong support to avoid recurring violence.
'If you don't support these countries then some of them may slide back. We need to consider how you help them stimulate economic activity, create jobs for youth who have been involved in this conflict, and focus on improving their lives,' Okonjo-Iweala said.
