I never had any idea a member of a petit jury
could be jailed for blabbing. All my experience
as a prospective juror and sitting juror does not
suggest that such could be the case. Last time
out the judge pleaded with us not to talk because
he would have to take a week or more out for an
evidentiary hearing; but no threats.

I'm pretty sure that when on a trial jury, I was instructed
not to discuss the case with anyone until it was over,
and that this instruction is standard.
After the case is decided you can talk about it.
It's more common for persons outside the jury to be
tried for jury tampering; for a juror to be tried they have
to do something egregious like offer to be bribed to
find the defendant innocent.
It's certainly true that if jurors seek outside information
that can result in a mistrial. Apparently, googling the
defendant or posting updates on the Intertubes
is now a serious problem, for example
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/18/us/18juries.html
Who the fuck thinks Twittering updates from the
jury box is a good idea?
BTW, links I found suggest that the laws (state or fed)
typically apply to grand juries as well as petit juries.

I said "could," not "will certainly." A quick google will
turn up a number of cases where jurors have been
charged with contempt of court for communicating with
defendants or the outside world, or for doing their
own "investigation." It's rare, and it's more likely to lead
to a fine than jail, but it does happen.

I didn't find offhand any cases of jurors being cited for
contempt for talking to reporters during a trial. As before,
I think this is partly because most reporters know not to take
that risk.

From what I could see in the helicopter shot of the finish I had
assumed it was Nibali in third and was quite surprised when the
commentators said Nibali finished out of the bonuses in fourth.
The more I think about it and re-watch, Agnoli screwed up a bit at the
end.
In the final K, I think the Universal Sports commentators said it was
Nibali and Sagan getting away from the other three, but it was
probably Capecchi and Nibali. But the others caught up and in the
final meters, the order was:
Capecchi
Nibali
Lastras
Agnoli
Sagan
with Capecchi fading fast and no time for the other LQ guys to help
out Nibali.
Then as four, Nibali is fading on the right (but not far enough over
to the right to pinch off Lastras) and it is:
Nibali
Agnoli
Sagan - Lastras about even
Agnoli leads out Sagan, on theleft but looks behind and sees Lastras
coming around to Nibali's right.
Sagan comes out from behind Agnoli and takes off on the left, Lastras
continues up the right. Nibali is actually still ahead of Agnoli at
this point.
Once Sagan comes around him, Agnoli should have sat up or even put on
the brakes since obviously no one was behind him. But instead, he
remains powering on out of the saddle for a few beats as if he's
trying to get a placing himself and gets half a bike length ahead of
Nibali. Then he probably realizes he's hosing the time bonus for his
leader and gets back on the saddle, but it's too late.
I guess we can chalk it up to the heat of the race and brief
inattention to the team's goals and the race situation.
So it seems that the team wanted Nibali to maybe get away with
Capecchi to get maximum bonus time, with Sagan hanging back to pick up
a sprint win if Lastras pulls it back together, which he did.

I really enjoyed the Colorado TT. Watching Levi on his bike gave me
pause - he was sitting _way_ off to one side on the saddle. His left
cheek bone was about in the center of the saddle. At first I thought
it was just a momentary repositioning or something, but as he rode you
could see that his spin was perfect and he was apparently centered and
balanced. Just 2" to the right. Weird.
Has anyone noticed such a large centering discrepancy in a world class
TT position?

Actually pretty well done although someone should tell the the camera
operators that they could back off a bit or move more to the side so
we could see an entire rider and all the nuances of his pedaling
rather than just a full frame closeup of a back and ass.

My impression from the coverage is that there are more attention-
seeking freaks on the mountain passes in US races than in Europe.
Total freak show.

Or more TV producers pandering to the masses. Freaks sell.

I saw the Zinger/Coors a couple of times including the day Johnathan/
Jaques Boy-er/Boy-A got his laps back. Funny about how getting good
racers together makes for good racing <g>.
Yes, I want this one to continue (FWIW) and that's why I'm squawking.
I noted Levi's "I was cold and shivering" yesterday. Very much a big
part of the game and one trip down toward Aspen from Independence I
got caught out when I knew better and survived a popped-open original
Dura Ace front caliper plus "shivering" with little drops of ice
appearing on my leg hairs ("why racers *really* shave") on what
started out as a hot summer day. And that, a short ride that turned
back well before the top when the storm rolled in-- which is a near-
daily occurrence at times on that hill.
I hope they get serious (the TV transmission problems did not get
fixed overnight) and make this race happen on a yearly basis. Fix the
TV uploads, first, and the second first, get some moto drivers who
know WTF is up. Seriously...

No barricades in finish line run-up, and intoxicated idiots-- altitude
doesn't help anything there!
Another place the moto riders were sorely lacking in performance.
They're probably mostly a group of volunteers. Maybe next year we'll
see a true corps at work.

Hoo Boy - this was a while ago but my aging memory banks are telling me
it was the Estes park Crit ? I have a great picture of Jock winning
that race coming across the finish line in his "hairnet" helmet, with it
unfastened <lol> He rode for GS Mengoni that year.

North Boulder Park, I believe. 1980. The riders in the break made
Boyer do all the work, from what I saw, while Londono and others were
roughed up in the "chase".
Michel Pollentier single-handedly blocked the "chase" pack for many
laps on that short course.
Yes, the helmet was unfastened and the race announcer threatened Boyer
with some kind of sanction-- I guess they didn't dare repeat the 5-
minute Centerline Violation biz-ness from '79?
Whatever, there is tradition both on the positive and negative sides
of the coin, so to speak. I hope they "go pro" and make this thing
work, although I think the races in Columbia might actually go higher
in altitude <g>.

I'm watching on Radioshack's Shack Tracker and finding the picture
breakup not so annoying since the feed has no commercials. Versus
drove me nuts with the commercials and their stupid lead-in graphics.
Versus spent more money and time showing their graphics then showing
the race.

The Colombians have some excellent riders. EPM also has amazing
consistency. Check out the team times. Even their domestiques are
strong.
How much of this is the altitude? And why don't the Colombians have a
bigger presence on the world cycling stage?

Hey all,
Just the other day my eye doctor diagnosed me with Pinguecula, a non-
cancerous growth on the white part of the eyeball due to wind/UV
exposure. I'd imagine that my past 7 years of road racing/riding has
contributed to the condition, and I was wondering if anyone else has
experienced this or knows anyone who has. Any advice on sunglasses,
treatment, methods, doctors, or otherwise would be greatly
appreciated.
