Yes. By all accounts he was not just a first-class player but also a first-class person. Just what Namath needed as a roommate. I bet he could've written a book about being that -- and still could. Somebody pay him!
Those Jets are always remembered as a big offensive team but they had the best defense in the AFL. Ralph Baker, the third LB, was very good too.
The whole D was very innovative and aggressive with Walt Michaels and Buddy Ryan coaching them. Those were the days when it was really true that "offense sold tickets and defense won championships". Namath & Co got all the glory -- but the Colts got only a late 7 in SB III.
The misfortune of the D was that the offense fell apart after '69, so while it continued on at a top level for some time longer, because the team as a whole did poorly the D never got recognized for how good it was.
Lots of very good D players on that team never got the recognition they deserved. Atkinson is one. Philbin would be in the HoF if he'd played on team that had more than two good winning seasons. So would Winston Hill on the O ... but I digress.
The top O and top D overlapped for only two years in that Jets era, 68 and 69. Before then Namath and the O were lighting it up but the D couldn't stay with them. After then the D was still clamping 'em down, but the O fell into the crapper.
Then the D finally fell into the crapper and it was 25 years of misery.

What's the big deal? The Ravens beat a mediocre Pitt team,
lost to a better but not great Tennessee team, and beat a bad
Rams team.
The Jets seem to go as Sanchez goes and are a pretty good
road team. They are probably embarrassed by last week.
I don't see why the Jets can't win handily unless Sanchez
has a bad game. This week, the ESPN pickers are all picking
Baltimore, but last week they all picked the Pats and look
what happened.

The Ravens are a pretty good home team. Somewhere around 23-11 at home I
believe.
:They are probably embarrassed by last week.

C'mon ...really? Whom do you think will have caused Sanchez to have a bad
game? The Jets defense is 31st over three games and not just from one bad
game. In fact IIRC, Sanchez had one of his better games last week and the
Jets still lost big-time to an inferior opponent. There are many reasons
against the Jets winning "handily", as you say. That stated, ...on any given
Sunday is an NFL fact.

You missed something, ...they also picked the Ravens last week, ...and look
what happened. This is a Conference game with play-off implications toward
home field. That won't be overlooked by the Ravens any more than the Jets.
Got to cut this off to make kickoff so wish my Ravens luck and I'll check
back tomorrow to get or give the kudos. It will be too late when I return
home, considering the post-game victory party and all that.

Losing Rob Turner was a huge blow to the depth of the offensive line.
IINM he'd be at center tonight if Mangold can't go. I have a funny
feeling tho Mangold will be starting.
As for Hunter vs. T-Sizzle: we'll see what Hunter's made of. Hunter is
an experienced talented vet but newer as a front-line starter. He's
got the tools and fire ... we'll see what happens tonight.
Ngata is Ngata. We'll see how the Jets manage him.

I'm watching the Texans vs. Steelers over here... At the end of the
half, the Texans blocked a Steelers FG attempt and one of Texans ran
it back for a would-be TD. There was a block in the back that was
called against the Texans. The TD was called back and the half was
over... Incidentally, that block in the back was no where near the guy
running the ball back for the Texans... None the less... Rules are
rules...
During the Steelers vs. Cardinals super bowl game, at the end of the
half, a Pittsburg defender picked off a pass from Warner and ran it in
for a "heroic" Steelers TD. The half ended. On that Steelers TD run
back in the Superbowl, a flagrant block in the back was made against
one of the Cardinals during the TD run back. This block in the back
was an instrumental part of the play and was quite visible. Too bad
for the Cardinals the officials didn't feel like calling that sort of
thing at the time. That TD that was given to the Steelers was a
difference maker for the Steelers. Withot those points, they lose the
Superbowl.
Too bad for the Texans, only the Steelers get such great "favors" from
the officials.

As I expected, the Steelers were going to come out after half time and
start taking over the game with help from the officials NOT calling
any holds. Number 79 on the left side of the steelets line has been
grabbing on to defenders with both hands and holding the shoulder
pads. # 66 was flipping bear hugging his guy... the Steelers are
running better because they are using their usual secret weapon....

Actually there was another BITB closer to the returner and performed seconds
after the first. I'm going to guess that the second may have drawn the flag.

Fortunately the Texans found it within themselves to overcome those bad
calls that were made. I'm still waiting to find out which Texans defender
made the "illegal contact" foul where Ben was sacked on a third and long in
the first half.
I see Ward had the smile knocked off his face again <snicker>. He was going
to drop the ball anyway, ...but awesome regardless.

During the preseason, maybin looked so fast and effective, I was
wondering if the jets hit pay dirt. Since he was not retained, I
gathered that he was not capable of doing anything at practice vs the
jets top of the line guys. Probably his lack of size and inability to
handle contact vs a guy that had a good pro skill set was obvious at
practice. Very much like clowney. Looks great but only vs scrubs. I'd
guess that is why maybin was let go. He can't do anything vs Bona
fied pros. Now I'm wondering why he was resigned. No way would they
have let him go in the first place if he was able to perform vs first
string talent. I think the resigning represents desperation.

As I said in my predictions before the season started... Eagles fans
in for a big let down.

Good grief... The officials had it in for the Cardinals today. They
gave the game to the Giants. A Hand full of VERY bad calls in favor of
the Giants who were outplayed. Worst of all was the 'he gave himself
up call'. A Giants wr made a football move, went down, was not
touched and then he spilled the ball on the turf while it was still
live. A Cards defender picked up the live ball, but the officials had
decided that the play waover, even though it wasn't. That horrendous
call gave the game to an undeserving team.
Nice job Giants. A GARBAGE win fit for a GARBAGE team.
See you chumps in December.

What a joke! is Rich Kotite wearing a Rex Ryan mask? This won't just
be a looooooong game. It will be a very long and losing season. We
lost too many good players as a result of the lockout. We miss the
backup tight end Ben Hartstock who could really block. Of course, we
have no pure pass rusher. Rex needs tone down the bluster.

Scenario, in order:
A: Ravens hit Sanchez, forcing a fumble for TD.
B: Play is reviewed, with confirmation that Sanchez fumbled.
C: During the Ravens extra point, the Jets call a timeout specifically
so that Rex Ryan can whine at the referee.
Like father, like son, I guess...

Very simply, they chose to go with what they had, rather than trying to improve the OL.
We all knew they had a problem at RT, and a big lack of depth.
So, once we lost Robert Turner, then Mangold, we've gotten exactly what would've been
expected.
And in the process, they're gonna get Sanchez killed.
On the D side, we're having the exact same problems as last season, a lack of
pass-coverage, in the middle of the field... and a weak pass-rush.
And lastly, they have an offense that is totally predictable. It often looks like
opposing defenses are in the huddle. They decided to stand-pat with the same OC, and
again, they got what would be expected. He has no clue how to adjust to what defenses
throw at him.
This is on management for going for imaginary players (Aso), & ignoring weaknesses they
needed to address.
The only hope, is that the players are tough pros, and will not quit.
So, maybe this can turn into a game, if the Ravens let-up a bit... a natural human
reaction to totally dominating an opponent.
