Beijing, Dec 1 (IANS) A man was arrested in the Chinese capital for
spreading rumours that many people have entered Beijing with syringes
"filled with the HIV virus", police said Thursday.

The man used the Sina Weibo blogger service to spread the HIV rumour,
Xinhua reported citing a statement from the Beijing municipal public
security bureau.

The microblog said: "Several people have entered Beijing with needle
tubes (syringes) filled with the HIV virus. There are people who have
been pricked by needles of AIDS infectors."

Beijing police confirmed that the information was false, and Wednesday
detained the writer of the microblog, a man named Li.

HIV-AIDS increases economic worries
http://www.thenewstribe.com/2011/12/01/hiv-aids-increases-economic-worries/#.TthMCbLhf49

By Katrina Jones - Dec 1st, 2011

United Nations: A United Nation report said on Thursday that millions
of HIV-affected households in Asia are facing "irreversible poverty"
because of the cost of living with the disease, with women and
children hardest hit.

According to the report, extra costs faced by HIV-affected households
make it harder for parents to pay for their children's education, with
school drop-out rates far higher for such families across the region.

The UN estimates some 34 million people worldwide lived with HIV last
year, while improved treatment has meant that the number of AIDS-
linked deaths has steadily dropped from a peak of 2.2 million in 2005
to 1.8 million last year.

According to UNAIDS estimates, the number of People Living with HIV &
AIDS (PLHA) in Pakistan is 97,400, i.e., approximately one hundred
thousand, out of which about half live in Sindh; 80% of them in
Karachi. In other words Karachi alone has a population of 40,000
People Living with HIV & AIDS.

One can easily have an idea about the grave and alarming situation of
AIDS in Sindh by considering the fact that the prevalence of HIV among
Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) increased from 0.4% in January, 2004 to
24% in 2005, and in 2007 it reached up to 30%.

A Poisonous Mix
Child Labor, Mercury, and Gold Mining in Mali
"I started gold mining at a small age," said a 15-year-old girl who lives in Mali. "I pan for gold, I also work with mercury... I also burn it. I have never heard that this is unhealthy. I work with mercury every day."
Governments from around the world recently met to negotiate an international treaty on mercury, which is often used in artisanal mining to separate out gold. Human Rights Watch was there, and helped push for the treaty to include language on protecting the health of miners – children, in particular. But the treaty needs to be stronger still.
Around the world, roughly a million children mine for gold. Many of them work with mercury, the silvery liquid metal that is one of the most toxic substances on earth. Even small doses of its vapor can cause mercury poisoning.
On December 6, Human Rights Watch will release a new report on how children labor under horrible conditions in Mali's mines, which annually produce gold worth US$218 million at current prices. Almost all of these children work with mercury, but Mali's government has not done enough to address the health and environmental effects of mercury.

Advances in Global Justice

It's been an eventful week in the world of international justice.
Laurent Gbagbo, the former president of Côte d'Ivoire, was transferred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The move is a step towards justice for the victims of Côte d'Ivoire's post-election violence and reinforces the message that top leaders can be held to account.
Human Rights Watch called on the ICC to move swiftly on investigations into crimes committed by forces allied with the current Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara. Forces on both sides have been implicated in grave international crimes.
In Kenya, a high court ruled that Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir must be arrested if he sets foot in the country. The ruling draws a line in the sand against future visits by Bashir, who visited Kenya in 2009. The ICC statute obliges member states to arrest Bashir, who faces charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
And the United Nations Committee against Torture called on Senegal to comply with its obligation to prosecute or extradite Chad's former dictator, Hissène Habré.
"Since Senegal refuses to prosecute Habré, it needs to extradite him to Belgium right away," said Reed Brody, counsel with Human Rights Watch.
